you might find that your diet is just enough to sustain your current weight.

When you excercise, if you can monitor your heart rate, make sure your always excercising in the correct ‘zone’. For me (aged 26 and male) if im burnign fat i work out with my heart rate somewhere in between 125 and 140. If im trying to improve fitness I generally cruise at between 80% and max heart rate (approx160-180). This is very hard work.

An exceptionally effective way of acheiving a high workout heart rate without continuous effort is known as interval training. If your on a cross trainer, work very hard for 30 seconds, then slow down the pace for 30 seconds and so on. Try and keep this up for at least 25 minutes but try for 35 mins or more. If you do this your fitness will go up very rapidly and a higher level if fitness turns your body into a fat burning machine.

Finally dont underestimate the effectiveness of weight training. You dont need to pump iron all day long, but building muscle requires consumption of fat which your body gets primarily from your food intake and then from your bodies fat reserves. Even when your not working out, your new lean muscle is eating away at your fat reserves.

Finally, if you have been heavy for a while, it takes a short time for your body to adapt to being a fat burner rather than a fat storer. Once the weight does start to come off, it will happen very quickly.
