What is a good brand of vitamin supplements for parakeets?

I prefer not to put anything in his water. What types do you find best?

I do not recommend vitamin supplements unless you have no other options. These so called vitamin supplements are very potent and hard on a birds digestive system. The ideal way for you to ensure your bird is getting proper nutrition is by what you are feeding him. Almost all birds that survive on a “seed-only” diet are malnurished and suffer some form of Vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A is to birds what Vitamin C is to humans. It is essencial for health and survival. Ideally, your birds diet should consist of not more than 25% seed diet. I suggest mixing this with 50% table foods (fruits, vegetables, and grains) focusing mainly on the foods rich in Vitamin A, such as your green and yellow foods. (I.E. Broccoli, spinach, carrots). The remaining 25% of the birds diet should consist of pellets. For this I recommend pellets that are not colored (dyed), this dye is very harmful to a birds system and can eventually lead to kidney failure. If you do not have your bird on pellets, be advised that the transformation must be made gradually. Generally a 80% seed/ 20% pellet, 60% seed/40% pellet, etc until they are only receiving a small amount of seed. Make sure to monitor your birds weight and food intake during any dietary changes. If your bird suddenly loses alot of weight, return to the normal seed amount.

I myself, feed my parakeets a bonanza seed diet with a combo of Harrisons Pellets. Its an organic pellet and requires no additional diet. However, with parakeets, I recommend keeping some seed invovled, as Harrisons does not contain any additives or fats. Its purely organic. My cockatiel on the other hand, feeds only on the Harrisons. I do not recommend this for your parakeet, due to the fat factor.
